👉 And here’s what most people don’t realize: There are some crucial things to look for in a neurofeedback provider—and some big red flags to avoid 🚩—that can make or break your experience. 

❌ Whether their office is five minutes from your house (I have clients who drive over an hour each way. Why? Because it’s a temporary inconvenience for powerful results that they weren’t getting from the neurofeedback therapist right around the corner). 

❌ Whether they take your insurance (if they do, they’re likely sneaking it under a “therapy session” label—and I’ll explain why that could be a problem)

❌ Or whether you’d enjoy having a casual coffee chat with them (though their energy does matter, but not in the way you might think—more on that later 😉).

What you will find in this guide are the things that actually matter—the things that determine whether you’ll get the transformation you’re looking for and keep it going for the long-term. ♾️ 

You’re looking for a neurofeedback therapist because you want real change—less anxiety, better sleep, more stable mood, more energy, less pain, a clearer mind. 🙌 

But if you’re investing time and money, you need to make sure you’re getting the kind of training that actually leads to deep, lasting results—not just a “session-to-session” experience that feels nice but doesn’t stick.

👉 Because when it comes to neurofeedback, you get what you pay for. 

The value isn’t in how many minutes you spend in the chair—it’s in how much your life changes after you leave it.

Here’s what to look for 👇

Neurofeedback isn’t just about hooking up to a machine—it’s a highly specialized field that requires real expertise.

But here’s what you may not realize…

Anyone can grab some equipment and call themselves a “neurofeedback provider” – there’s no regulation for the field. 

And even among those who received a “certificate of completion” from a neurofeedback course, the training programs vary widely in their rigor and requirements.

So, here are the questions to ask before you go any further:

✔️ Are they Board-Certified in Neurofeedback (BCN)? BCIA is an international organization that requires rigorous training, knowledge of neuroanatomy and a high-degree of mentoring with experienced practitioners before they sign off on Board Certification. If a Neurofeedback therapist is not listed on bcia.org, cross them off your list. (Seriously.)

✔️ Where did they train? A weekend course isn’t enough. They should have rigorous training, solid mentorship, and ongoing case consultations.

✔️ Are they staying current? Neurofeedback is always evolving—your provider should be, too. Continuing education in neuroanatomy and the latest research is a must.

✔️ What’s their actual license? If you’re dealing with trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, or other mental health or nervous system-related issues, a background in psychology, counseling, or a related field (plus trauma training!) is also a must.

Some providers sneak neurofeedback into therapy sessions—often as a way to bill insurance. 

Sounds efficient, right? Not so fast…

👉 Unless sessions are 90+ minutes, this waters down both the therapy and the neurofeedback. Therapy needs time. Neurofeedback requires focus. You can’t do both well in a typical 1-hour session.

👉 Neurofeedback is a specialized field. A provider juggling therapy and neurofeedback may not be deeply trained in either. You want someone who lives and breathes nervous system and brain-based work.

Bottom line? Specialized focus = better results.

You might think a full QEEG (Quantitative EEG or “brain map”)—where they stick dozens of sensors on your head and analyze every single brain region—is the gold standard. 

And sure, it sounds impressive. 

But unless you have a complex brain difference, like a TBI, seizure disorder, or a learning disability, this is usually overkill (and a pricey one at that).

👉 Just because your brainwaves in one area don’t match the so-called “average” doesn’t mean that area needs to be changed. 

But some practitioners assume it does and use this as the starting point for training—basically saying, “Oops! Your brain doesn’t look like the textbook example, so let’s fix that.”

🚨 That’s a problem

The goal of neurofeedback isn’t to make your brain “average”—it’s to help you function at your personal best. (And I don’t want you wondering where your exceptional negotiating skills went or why you’re no longer the basket-weaving champion! 😉)

✔️ A mini-map + full nervous system/arousal assessment—this gives the most comprehensive picture of relevant information without drowning in unnecessary complexity.

✔️ A provider who prioritizes your lived experience. If they’re obsessed with adjusting brain regions without connecting it to how you feel and function every day, they’re missing the point. The real goal isn’t a pretty brain map—it’s figuring out what’s keeping you stuck and how to shift it.

Brain training should be about optimizing YOU, not making you fit a statistical norm. 🙃

Neurofeedback is about rewiring how your brain and nervous system function—but change can be subtle at first. If your provider isn’t tracking shifts beyond just your main symptoms, they’re flying blind.

Here’s why that matters:


The first signs of change might not even be where you expect

Maybe you came in for anxiety, but before you notice fewer racing thoughts, you realize your digestive issues ease up or your sleep improves slightly. Or maybe your chronic shoulder tension suddenly isn’t so bad.

💡 These aren’t just random side benefits—they’re critical clues.

✔️ Your brain and nervous system are deeply connected to your body. Small shifts in tension, digestion, energy, mood, or focus tell your provider whether they’re on the right track—or if adjustments are needed.


✔️ If they’re only asking, “So, how’s the anxiety?” they might miss these early wins or subtle clues that shifts need to be made to your protocol—and that means they could take way longer to find the right protocol for you.

🚨 Missing the early signs = a longer road to results.

A skilled provider tracks everything—because even the tiniest shifts can be the first steps toward big, lasting transformation. 🚀

Not all neurofeedback systems are created equal. Some use outdated approaches, while others are more adaptable and effective.

🚫 Ignore the High-Frequency vs. Infra-Low Frequency debate — In fact, if you don’t know what those are, don’t even worry about looking it up (whew! One thing off your plate 😅) – research has proven that both are equally powerful and effective

✔️ What does matter is how well your provider can adjust the system to fit YOUR brain. Look for a neurofeedback therapist actively using a system that allows real-time manual adjustments, rather than one that relies purely on computer-generated thresholds.

🚨 Why Flashy Software Isn’t Better (and Can Actually Hurt Your Results!)


You might assume that the system with the best graphics = the best training. 

👉 But actually, more computing power wasted on visuals = slower feedback = weaker learning.

✔️ Real-time feedback is EVERYTHING. Your brain learns from instant responses. If the system takes even half-a-second too long to reward your brain, it sees that as ancient history and has no idea what it did right. (Imagine someone suddenly laughing in your face for a joke you told yesterday—even though you know you’re funny, you’d still be confused, right? 🤔 Your brain feels the same way.)


✔️ Watching a movie? Fun, but not effective. Some systems let you watch a movie during training, but this can actually work against your learning. Movies are passive and naturally engaging—so your brain isn’t really doing the work. The best systems use real-time, informative screens that help you understand how and why things are changing.

Neurofeedback isn’t a “set it and forget it” process—at least, not when done right

If a provider slaps some sensors on your head, starts a session, and then basically just… watches (or worse, leaves the room 😬), you’re missing out on one of the most important aspects of effective brain training: an engaged, attuned practitioner.

👉 A great provider is actively monitoring everything—not just the data on their screen, but what’s happening in real-time with you and around you, including:

🔹 Your EEG changes—Sure, they see the shifts happening on the screen, but what triggered them?
🔹 Environmental factors—Did a loud truck just rumble by? Did that sudden noise spike your nervous system response? They notice.
🔹 Your body language—Are you suddenly fidgeting more? Blinking a lot? Slouching? These subtle cues tell them what’s happening in your nervous system before you even realize it.

Why does this matter? 

👉 Because neurofeedback isn’t just about training the brain—it’s about training you to notice what’s happening in your own system. That’s called interoceptive awareness, and it’s a huge key to lasting change.

A skilled provider will:
✔️ Encourage curiosity—“Hey, did you notice that shift just now? What were you feeling?”
✔️ Guide you through micro-adjustments—If you’re struggling to focus, they might pause to help you adjust your posture, relax your shoulders, or even do a quick nervous system reset.
✔️ Fine-tune the session in real-time—because your experience right now is just as important as the data on the screen.

💡 This is why a licensed practitioner being in the room matters. 

No software, no remote provider, and certainly no DIY at-home neurofeedback device can pick up on these cues the way a human can. And without this level of attunement, you’re missing out on a big piece of what makes neurofeedback so powerful.

This is why Neurofeedback alone—without full nervous system regulation—can sometimes fall short. 

If a Neurofeedback provider is only focusing on adjusting your brainwaves without addressing the state of your entire nervous system, you might see some improvements, but they won’t be as deep or as lasting as they could be.

Your brain and body are one system—they communicate constantly. 

Your nervous system isn’t just in your head; it’s in every part of you, from your gut (which has more neurons than your spinal cord!) to the fascia in your muscles (which holds onto tension and trauma patterns).

That’s why the most effective neurofeedback providers integrate body-based and nervous system regulation practices into their approach. This might include:

✔️ Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation to cue a genuinely felt sense of safety (for many of my clients, this has never been their baseline – and therefore, it’s often the most powerful part of our work!)

✔️ Breathwork that actually creates better coherence between your heart, brain and other organs (not just “take deep breaths” 🙄)
✔️ Subtle posture and movement adjustments to get you into a more regulated state before and during training

For many of my clients, their nervous system has been stuck in fight, flight, or freeze for so long that their baseline has become stress, anxiety, reactivity or numbness.

👉 But here’s the thing: everyone’s needs are different when it comes to what actually helps them maintain their progress.

A good provider won’t just hand you a generic list of self-care activities and tell you to “go do these.” 

Instead, they’ll help you figure out what works for you, based on:

🔹 What your daily life actually looks like (because no, you don’t need more to-do list overwhelm)
🔹 What your nervous system needs at different times (alertness vs. relaxation, movement vs. stillness, etc.)
🔹 What you’re already drawn to or naturally resist (because forcing yourself into something stressful is not the goal)

Here’s some good news if you’re already feeling overloaded: you don’t have to add a bunch of new habits right away.

It’s not uncommon for people to come to me after trying neurofeedback somewhere else—with little to no results. 

Some have even done 50+ sessions without real change! 😳 

Why were they still continuing it for so long with the same provider? 

👉 Likely because it seemed cheaper (their therapist was successfully billing it to their insurance under a “therapy session”; you remember how well that works, right? 👆) 

But, riddle me this:

What’s the point of spending any of your time and money if it’s not actually helping? 🤷‍♀️

My clients see progress quickly—and if they don’t, we adjust quickly so they do. 

Most are completely done (including tapering off) in an average of about 30 sessions—because that’s how neurofeedback should work when it’s done right.

➡️ Here’s an example of the powerful difference the right neurofeedback AND nervous system regulation techniques can make:

One of my clients came to me after years of struggling with low mood, exhaustion, constant tension, and feeling like he’d lost his spark after a medical trauma. 

He was skeptical—he’d already tried neurofeedback twice with two different providers.

😬 Provider #1: Didn’t do an assessment, just hooked him up to sensors (this is a huge red flag 🚩). The result? A manic episode. This should never happen when Neurofeedback is done safely by a fully trained, licensed provider who understands proper assessment and protocol selection.

😕 Provider #2: Did a full QEEG brain map followed by 20 sessions based on the QEEG—but while he saw slight improvements, he still felt stuck. The missing piece?
