Have you ever felt torn between being the creative dreamer and the analytical go-getter?
Like you have to choose between painting outside the lines – but risking feeling spacey and unproductive…🫠
Or staying laser-focused – but losing touch with your creative spark? ☹️
It’s no wonder we feel this way.
From a young age, we’re taught—sometimes explicitly, but often through subtle messages—that we have to “pick a lane.”
🤔 Think about it: the one-dimensional characters on TV growing up, where everyone had a role and stuck to it.
The brainiac wasn’t the artist.
The dreamer wasn’t the leader.
Those messages sink in and shape how we see ourselves. 🪞
But I’m here to tell you the truth…
📣 You don’t have to choose.
In fact, we all have the capability to be both—and so much more.
That creative spark and sharp focus? They’re already within you, waiting to shine.
It’s just that the weight of expectations, anxiety, and stress can dim them, making it feel like you have to pick one path or the other.
But in reality, balancing these two sides of yourself is the key to thriving.
The artist in you just needs structure and focus to bring ideas to life, and the executive in you needs imagination to solve problems in innovative ways.
But here’s the thing…
⚖️ Achieving this balance often requires more than sheer willpower..
👩🏽💻 The Executive’s Dilemma: Go-Go-Go (Until You Burn Out)
If you identify with the executive or entrepreneur archetype, you’re probably no stranger to the “go-go-go” mindset.
✅ You’ve got the to-do lists, the hustle, and the drive to make things happen.
But let’s be real: anxiety is often lurking just beneath the surface.
🔥 Maybe you even use it as fuel. (In fact, this is so common among my clients, I wrote a blog on The Secret to Letting Go of Anxiety Without Letting Go of Your Drive.)
Here’s the problem: when your nervous system is stuck in overdrive (hello, chronic stress 😬), your brain spends too much time in Fast Beta brainwave activity.
This is a state of high alert – great for short-term problem-solving when you’re in true tiger-in-your-face crisis but exhausting when it becomes your baseline.
🚩 Over time, this state can lead to burnout, overthinking, and a loss of perspective.
You’re so busy putting out fires that you can’t see the bigger picture or tap into your creativity and innovation.
🧑🏼🎤 The Artist’s Struggle: Too Much Dreaming, Not Enough Doing
Now let’s talk about the artist or innovator archetype.
You’re brimming with ideas, always imagining, and often find your best inspiration while daydreaming or relaxing.
That’s because this mode taps into Theta and Alpha brainwaves – the slow, dreamy state where creative connections thrive.
👉 But if you spend too long in this hypoaroused state, it’s easy to get stuck – and time floats on by… (ooh, like those clouds over there that look like ice cream – no, a bear riding a tractor with a lollipop tail!)
🚩 Amazing ideas pile up, but follow-through feels impossible.
You might feel foggy, disconnected, or even frustrated that your big dreams aren’t turning into reality.
Creative Productivity: How to Balance Drive and Dreaming
True creative productivity comes from being able to flexibly shift between brain and nervous system states.
The executive’s focus and the artist’s imagination can be two sides of your unique coin.
But when either one dominates or gets stuck, you lose out on your full potential:
❌ If the executive is always in overdrive, you lose the ability to innovate and approach problems creatively.
❌ If the artist stays in dream mode, your incredible ideas never make it into the world.
The magic happens when your brain and nervous system can shift effortlessly between inspiration and implementation, dreaming and doing.
The Role of Brainwaves and Nervous System Regulation
Your brain operates in different states depending on the task at hand. Here’s a quick breakdown of just a couple brainwave states:
💡 Theta brainwaves are for creativity, dreaming, and out-of-the-box thinking.
🔨 Beta brainwaves are for focus, problem-solving, and getting things done (but beware the Fast Beta waves – they create anxiety, rumination and hypervigilance!).
Here’s the thing: you can only access the full range of brainwave states when your nervous system feels safe.
(Psst! Want to know about all the brainwave states needed to stop overthinking and unlock creative flow – check out this post next…)
🎶 Imagine your brain and nervous system as a piano.
When it’s perfectly tuned, every note is clear and harmonious, letting you play anything from powerful symphonies to gentle melodies – gliding effortlessly between sounds.
👉 But when it’s out of tune – often due to chronic stress, early experiences, or trauma – even simple tunes sound off.
When your nervous system is dysregulated, it can get stuck in overarousal (fight-or-flight) or underarousal (freeze):
😫 In overarousal, it’s like constantly playing frantic, chaotic high-pitched keys, leading to anxiety, overthinking, and exhaustion.
😞 In underarousal, the notes are dull and disconnected, showing up as brain fog, lack of motivation, or a sense of being stuck.
To function at your best – thinking clearly, solving problems creatively, and working productively – your nervous system needs to feel safe (This is way more than just your thinking brain understanding logically that your environment is likely safe, but a feeling of safety deep in your system, in your body).
👉 True safety is the foundation that allows your brain to shift smoothly between states, enabling you to focus deeply, problem-solve effectively, and tap into creative flow. 👈
For many, though, true safety is unfamiliar. Chronic stress or past trauma may have kept you stuck in hypervigilance or shutdown for so long that balance feels out of reach.
The good news?
You can retune your nervous system.
With powerful, research-proven – but non-invasive and drug-free – tools like Neurofeedback and Vagus Nerve stimulation practices, you can rewire your nervous system to access genuine safety.
❌ This isn’t about just telling yourself to calm down or focus…
✔️ It’s about rewiring the very systems that determine how you experience and respond to the world.
When your nervous system is balanced, you can press any key – creativity, focus, relaxation, or problem-solving – and hear it ring out clearly.
🎯 Your work becomes more productive, your ideas more innovative, and your life more joyful and fulfilling.
You’re no longer stuck in the frantic noise of overarousal or the muted hum of underarousal.
Instead, you’re playing the full, beautiful range of your potential. 🎶
Meet Elliot: Finding His Balance
Elliot (pseudonym) was the ultimate go-getter. He thrived on achieving and was known for his sharp problem-solving skills.
But deep down, he felt stuck.
His anxiety was through the roof, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d lost his spark. On weekends, he’d dream about writing poetry or taking an art class but felt too drained to even try.
When Elliot started working with me, we focused on calming his overactive nervous system and retraining his brain to access different states. 🧠 (He’d already read my blog on The Secret to Letting Go of Anxiety Without Losing Your Drive – so he wasn’t worried about losing his “fuel” 🔥 in the process.)
Through Neurofeedback and other nervous system and body-based practices, he learned to flexibly shift from Fast Beta overdrive into calm, focused Low Beta – and even Theta when he wanted to spark his imagination. ⚡️
The result?
✅ Elliot found himself being more innovative at work, solving problems with fresh ideas instead of sheer willpower.
✅ And in his downtime, he rediscovered his passion for poetry – even performing at an open mic for the first time!
By finding balance, Elliot didn’t have to choose between being the artist or the executive. He got to be both.
🌟 And both sides of his unique coin were better off for it.
How to Achieve Better Nervous System Regulation and a More Flexible Brain
The key to unlocking this balance is training your brain and nervous system to work more flexibly, from a place of genuine inner safety.
Here’s how Embodied NeurofeedbackTM helped Elliot (and so many of my other clients) – and could help you enjoy all your sides again too:
🧠 Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback) retrains your brain to move flexibly between states, so you can access calm focus, productive problem-solving or creative flow whenever you need it.
🧘🏽 Body-based and Vagus nerve stimulation practices create a genuine felt-sense of safety in your nervous system (instead of sending a constant internal signal of “danger”), releasing tension and stress that keep you stuck in overdrive or shutdown.
By addressing the brain, body and autonomic nervous system, you build the flexibility needed to thrive as both an artist and executive in one incredible and authentic YOU.
