Any licensed healthcare provider can purchase the equipment and set up shop, but only some have gone through the extensive training and testing required to become Board Certified in Neurofeedback (BCN). (be sure your provider is on BCIAâs list)
Also, some providers (even some BCNs) hook you up to the equipment and have you passively watching a movie while your brain hopefully does the work. But, while many of us use car engine metaphors for Neurofeedback (yup, guilty! I mean, they are good metaphors đ¤ˇđťââď¸), you know you arenât actually a car (youâre so smart!). Wait, What Exactly Are You Doing to My Brain? (and What could go wrong?)
Ok, no need to freak out. 𫣠Breathe.
Neurofeedback (and the other techniques in the 1-4-U Ripple Experience) arenât doing anything invasive to your brain or body.
Instead, the Neurofeedback system receives information from your brain through sensors placed on your head. The sensors receive the electrical signals put out by groups of neurons firing below the surface, but they donât give off any signal directly back to your brain (itâs like when you put a thermometer in your mouth – it takes a reading of the heat but it doesnât actually do anything to your mouth).
The computer system then gives you – and your brain (even more instantaneously and subtly) – feedback based on the pattern of brain wave frequencies it sensed.
Think of it like a fun, high-tech mirror that helps you see how your brain is functioning so your brain and body can make positive changes – often on its own (but over time, you also learn how to read and adjust your own body and brain in order to get into whatever state you need).
Now, you might also be thinking, âWhat could go wrong?â đ¤
Rest assured, not only are Neurofeedback and the other methods we use non-invasive, they have also been extensively researched. Theyâre not known to have side effects.
In fact, theyâre designed to help your brain and body find a better balance naturally.
Sometimes, very early on in the process, you might experience some unwanted effects – like feeling slightly more tired or wired than usual for a day or so. (Good news: If this does happen, itâs usually a good sign that your brain is going to be very responsive to the feedback – Yay!)
