How to get rid of anxiety and still be productive

The Secret to Letting Go of Anxiety Without Letting Go of Your Drive

You were the one who kept it together.

The responsible one. The helper. Or the achiever.

Maybe you were the kid who made sure they were easy to parent, easy to teach, easy to love — even when it was hard…

Or the kid who got straight A’s, volunteered for extra credit, and stayed late to help clean up after practice to prove their worth…

The one who made sure everything looked perfect on the outside, even if it felt chaotic on the inside. 😬

Now, you’re the adult who Does.It.All.

The coworker who never misses a deadline, stays late to pick up the slack, and says “yes” to everything—even when it’s too much. (Waaay too much…)

You’re capable, thoughtful, “resilient.”

And on the outside, you look like you’re doing just fine – maybe even killing it… 🔥

But inside?

You’re tired. Not just physically — but in your bones.

Maybe you feel anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed… like you’re moving through life on autopilot.

You’ve tried the self-care routines, the mindset work, the journaling.

Maybe you’ve even tried therapy. (Maybe more than once. After all, your motto is I Can, I Can, I Will dammit…💪🏽)

But something’s still off, and you can’t figure out why.

And then there’s this thought in the back of your mind:

If I let go of my anxiety, how will I keep everything running? 😳

What if you need that anxious energy to stay productive? To be the responsible one? To keep it all together?

Here’s the thing: You don’t. 🙅‍♀️

Ok, first: Exhale. 😮‍💨

I’m not going to ask you to give up your drive (Unless you decide you want to – but not a requirement).

You can keep smashing it AND be allowed to breathe!

I get that that sounds impossible (And I really do get it. I’m a recovering combo Overachiever-Helper myself – Hi! 🙋🏻).

But stay with me. The first thing I need you to know is…

Right now, anxiety might feel like the thing that keeps you moving. It makes sure you don’t drop the ball, keeps you alert, and pushes you to do more – right?

Not so fast.

You see, anxiety is sneaky like that.

What it’s really doing is burning through your energy reserves, keeping your body tense and your mind on overdrive. ⚡

🛑 It’s not your driver; it’s your brake.

The constant worry, overthinking, and pressure are what’s holding you back from being your amazing, authentic self.

So, letting go of anxiety doesn’t mean losing your edge – it actually means gaining the clarity, calm, and focus to thrive 🌱 – so you can find a more effortless drive. (Woo-hoo! Start crossing things off the to-do list!)

To do that, let’s go behind the scenes of your brain, body and overall nervous system, Inside Out-style…

When your anxiety (or “drive” as you may have called it) is fairly constant, it’s usually from your brain and nervous system being stuck in survival mode.

(Psst! If you’ve had your anxiety since childhood or young adulthood, you can learn more about how your nervous system ends up in this default state, by checking out this blog on the impact of ACEs and how they can keep so-called “regulation” tools from working for you.)

In survival mode, your brain and nervous system treat any situation like a potential threat – whether it’s a physical danger or the emotional danger of judgement or rejection.

That’s why you feel like you always have to be “on.”

In this state, your brain’s Fast Beta brainwaves are working overtime, and your body’s fight-or-flight response is running the show.

It’s exhausting. 😩

Your brain is always at work — even when you’re not consciously thinking.

And it does so through different brainwave frequencies, which are basically the speed at which your neurons, or brain cells, are firing and communicating with each other.

🧠 We can measure your brainwaves through an EEG (using sensors on your scalp to measure patterns of electrical activity in your brain).

For our purposes, you can think of frequencies like different speeds or “gears” your brain shifts into depending on what you’re doing.

In general, there are five main types of brainwave frequencies that play an important role in how you feel and function (and all are necessary – to a degree and in the right situation):

💤 Delta (deep sleep, restoration)

🌙 Theta (deep relaxation, creativity, emotional processing)

Alpha (relaxed, restful daydreaming)

💡 Beta (active thinking and problem-solving)

Fast Beta (hypervigilance, rumination, and anxiety)

Regular Beta waves are essential when it comes to active thinking, focusing, and problem-solving — they help you stay alert and tackle tasks that require mental energy and concentration.

Now, you might be thinking – “This is helpful – I just need faster brainwaves so I can get more done. Then all my problems will go away!”

But, not so Fast… (I couldn’t resist the pun – not sorry 🤓).

Because Fast Beta puts your brain and body in a constant state of alertness, like you’re always bracing for danger.

And when your nervous system is in survival mode, your brain can default to too much Fast Beta – in other words, your brain is constantly spinning (and, no, not in a productive way).

It isn’t just mentally draining; it triggers your body’s physical stress response (fight-or-flight), even when there’s no immediate danger.

When you stay in Fast Beta for too long, your brain and body burn out — like running a marathon when you’re already out of breath.

You become jittery, exhausted, and unable to fully relax. 😓

The good news?

Even if it’s been this way since childhood, your nervous system doesn’t have to stay stuck in survival mode.

Thanks to neuroplasticity, you can shift not only your brainwaves but your entire nervous system to a more safe and balanced state – allowing you to feel calm, clear, and focused.

When your nervous system feels safe, your brain is more flexible and it’s easier to transition from Fast Beta into Beta (for problem-solving), Alpha or Theta (for relaxation, creativity, and emotional healing) and even Delta waves (for much needed restorative sleep).

So, when your nervous system isn’t stuck in survival mode, it frees up your precious mental and physical energy.

💡 You can think clearly.

💡 You feel more grounded.

💡 Your body releases unnecessary tension.

💡 You respond to challenges with ease.

💡 All without exhausting yourself –  because your energy isn’t wasted on background noise.

Instead of losing your motivation or ambition, you get to redirect your energy toward what lights you up!

And your real strength and clarity can finally shine through. ✨

This isn’t just wishful thinking.

Neuroplasticity is your brain and nervous system’s ability to reorganize and form new connections in response to experiences.

✅ At the brain level, this means that pathways associated with stress, anxiety, or survival modes can be rewired over time.

✅ At the nervous system level, neuroplasticity allows your body to shift out of chronic tension or shutdown, helping your system become more flexible and responsive.

👉 This means your brain and body can learn to stay balanced, even in the face of external stress, instead of constantly being triggered into fight-or-flight or overwhelmed shutdown.

It’s about reworking the foundation of how your body and brain interact with the world.

But here’s the catch: it’s not as simple as breath work or journaling (If it were, you wouldn’t be reading this blog right now…)

These patterns were deeply engrained over time through repeated experiences, and it takes special techniques to help your brain and nervous system fully undo them.

That’s why targeted, deep techniques are necessary for real transformation

🎯 It’s not about a quick fix — it’s about shifting the very wiring of your brain and nervous system, so that new, healthier patterns can take hold.

An excellent example of this is Embodied Neurofeedback in Richmond, VA: Combining brain training and nervous system repatterning, this approach works by gently guiding your brain and body out of survival mode and into a state of true safety and balance – for good.

How?

Through an integrated and individualized system of research-backed techniques, including:

🧠 Brainwave Balancing with Neurofeedback: Through advanced computer-assisted brain training, your brain learns to move out of Fast Beta overdrive and into a flexible range of frequencies. This creates the foundation for better focus, calm, and emotional regulation.

💓 Nervous System Repatterning: Techniques like Heart Rate Variability (HRV) coherence training help synchronize your breath, heart and brain, bringing your body’s systems in-sync with each other and signaling to your body that it’s safe to relax and recharge.

💫 Vagus Nerve Stimulation: A clinical-level listening protocol (non-invasive) activates the vagus nerve, cuing your nervous system to shift into a state of feeling genuinely safe (sometimes for the first time).

🧘🏽 Fascial Unwinding & Mind-Body Integration: Restorative Yoga and somatic exercises deepen your connection to your body, teaching it to release stored tension and hold onto calm energy even during life’s challenges.

The result?

A calm, centered baseline that helps you respond to life with clarity and purpose.

You’re still you—just with more energy, focus, and emotional freedom. 💃🏽

Meet Abbie. She’s a powerhouse 🔥 — MBA in hand, climbing the corporate ladder like a pro, and outwardly thriving in her career.

But inside?

She was stuck in the all-too-familiar cycle: on edge at work, snapping at her kids, struggling with IBS, and yearning for something more.

She craved the things I talk about in my blogs: the ability to relax, feel content – maybe even happy! – in the moment.

But one thought kept holding her back:

“What if I lose my driver?”

Abbie was so afraid to let go of the anxiety-fueled energy that had carried her this far that it took her almost a year to book that first appointment.

During our consultation, we talked through everything I’ve laid out here.

I reassured her that her edge wasn’t coming from anxiety — it was despite it.

That her drive, creativity, and success could actually expand when her nervous system and brain were working in her favor. 💪🏽

Hesitantly — and still worrying (of course, that’s the default!) — she decided to give it a try.

What happened next surprise her…

Abbie discovered a whole new level of drive.

Not the push-push-push kind that comes from pressure and external rewards, but a steady, energizing motivation from within

With her brain and nervous system no longer stuck in overdrive, new space opened up in her mind — room for fresh ideas and the energy and follow-through to make them happen.

🌟 She became sharper at work, able to articulate her thoughts and bring in clients with ease.

But the biggest shift?

🌟 She actually enjoyed her work again.

🌟 And when she was off the clock, she didn’t crash and burn. She relaxed. She had fun.

🌟She was present with her family – and they felt the difference too. In fact, her family — the people she had tried so hard to make happy for so long — were not only happier themselves but thrilled to see her thrive.

👉 And I have to say, as amazing as she is, Abbie’s story isn’t unique. (In fact, this is so common among my clients, I decided to write a blog about it. 😉)

Abbie’s journey is proof that when you let go of the weight of anxiety (at the level of your brain and nervous system patterns), you don’t lose your edge — you gain the kind of clarity, energy, and drive that make life worth living.

Because…

Take it from someone who’s watched countless clients reach the other side of this seemingly insurmountable mountain (and climbed over it myself 🙋🏻):

Anxiety – and a default survival mode – has only been masking your incredible, authentic self.

Maybe it’s been driving you to seek external validation, follow other people’s expectations, and push through the exhaustion. 😓

But when you let anxiety step aside, your real fuel takes over:
✨ Your passions.
✨ Your creativity.
✨ Your natural joy when working toward what truly matters to you.

You’re still achieving. You’re still helping. But you’re doing it from a place of joy, not tension. 💖

Picture this:
✔️ You wake up feeling refreshed and calm.
✔️ Your mind isn’t racing through a to-do list before your feet even hit the floor.
✔️ You move through your day with ease, making decisions with confidence and connecting with others from a place of authenticity.

This is what’s possible when anxiety is no longer in the driver’s seat. 🚗💨

You’re letting go of the mental and emotional weight that’s been holding you back, and gaining yourself.

What an incredible relief!
